Cortland, NY -- The Cortland Regional Sports Council announced today that the Crown City Lumberjack Invitational will return to the area for the third year. More than 20 competitors are expected for the June 2nd event.
"As it stands right now there are 14 men and 8 women confirmed to compete, said Peg Engasser, who along with her husband, Dave, organizes the competition. "Two of the competitors are from Australia, 4 are from Canada, and the balance are from the U.S." The Engassers are from Virgil and have competed internationally.
"Several of the Lumberjacks and Lumberjills slated to compete at the Crown City event are using this as a sort of tune-up for the summer Stihl Timbersports series," said Machell Phelps, Executive Director of the Cortland Regional Sports Council. "We are pleased to have such high caliber competitors in our event. Being able to watch these athletes in person in our community and then see them compete on National TV in the Stihl series is a rare opportunity. We hope people will take advantage of this chance to see exceptional talent in Cortland County."
Both Peg Engasser and Matt Bush, the reigning Crown City Lumberjack Champions, will be here to defend their titles. New for 2007 is the donation of competition wood from Gutchess Lumber. Both Gutchess Lumber and the Chain Saw Center have come on board to help support the event as local sponsors.
The event will take place at the JM McDonald Sports Complex. Doors will open at 11:00 am to allow spectators to see the preparation and warm up phase of the competition. The event starts at 1:00 p.m. Seating is limited to 800 spectators and advance sale tickets are available now by contacting either the Cortland Regional Sports Council at 756-1864 or the JM McDonald Sports Complex at 753-8100.
