The Cortland YMCA Stingers Swim Team will be hosting the prestigious NYS Swimming Championships on March 16th, 17th & 18th at SUNY Cortland's Holstein Pool in the Park Center. Friday evening kicks off the event with Warm-ups and Qualifying. Saturday & Sunday will feature the various classes' heats and finals. An actual meet schedule can be found as we approach the Championships on www.thestingers.org.
"This meet will feature some of the best swimming talent in New York State" says Meet Director, Nick Pizzola. "It is quite an event to be a part of."
Admission to the NYS YMCA Swimming Championships will be $5.00 for a day pass or $10.00 for a weekend pass.
The Cortland Regional Sports Council's Executive Director, Machell Phelps, added "It is a privilege for the Cortland community to play a role in hosting this event. As the sport evolves, competition to host such a large event is increasing. We all need to be aware of the magnitude of something such as these Championships and make the commitment to support it." Over 1,000 competitors plus coaches, parents and spectators are expected to arrive in Cortland beginning on Friday, March 16th.
A listing of area restaurants, shopping locations and other things to do while in Cortland will be handed out to each visitor. These items were prepared by the Cortland Regional Sports Council and the Cortland Convention & Visitor's Bureau. "For example, it is our hope that they visit Downtown Cortland, maybe bowl a game or two at 281 Bowl and eat at Doug's Fish Fry while in town. The economic impact and sales tax generated by a sporting event such as this is tremendous" said Phelps.
